South Waterfront
New Vancouver-Style Condo Community
The River Blocks at South Waterfront is Portland's newest urban renewal project along the Willamette River in Downtown Portland. Baby boomers and urban professionals seeking urban housing have fueled a great demand for more condos in the Portland area. Several condo towers, similar to those in the Pearl District, are currently being built and are due to be finished as early as 2006. In all, over the next three years, as many as a dozen condo towers will be built in this new up-and-coming neighborhood. The plans also include an apartment building similar to the condo towers, office buildings, restaurants, movie theaters, boutiques, and more.
Two new parks will be centrally located in the South Waterfront. A riverfront park will feature a pedestrian path that will connect the South Waterfront to the rest of downtown Portland. Other plans include an interpretive center that will have a pier and an urban beach.
The South Waterfront is accessible by the Portland Streetcar that runs from Northwest Portland and the Pearl District through Downtown and Portland State University. An aerial tram, currently under construction, will transport doctors, patients, students, and visitors from Oregon Health and Science University's new health and research buildings on the waterfront up the hill to the main campus and the OHSU and Doernbecher hospitals.
